The Truth Behind Hair Transplant Scars and Recovery

The basic belief and fear that many have before going for a hair transplant are the scars post-surgery. Over the years, hair transplant treatments have come a long way. The technology advancements, surgical techniques and surgical procedures have left behind the hair transplant scars. The growing demands, easy process, no scars have given rise to newer hair transplant techniques. Yes, the traditional hair transplant procedure like the FUT hair transplant did leave scars behind. However, the latest treatments are much easier, simple, less painful. And don’t leave any permanent scar. The scars occur due to hair extractions. There are 2 types of hair extraction methods – Strip extraction and follicular unit extraction. Whichever you choose, know that wound-closure ways have changed, focusing on fewer hair transplant scars. In case you are planning for hair transplant in Mumbai, you can always visit Nubello Aesthetics. The extraction technique you choose depends on:

  • The type of scarring you can expect.
  • Your hair loss pattern.
  • The amount and quality of your donor’s hair.
  • The size of the area where your hair has thinned out.
  • Cost of hair transplant surgery.

Based on the above factors, you and your hair specialist can best determine which hair transplant procedure will be most effective for your hair loss condition. Understanding the hair transplant process will give you a clear idea.

Understanding the Hair Transplant Process

Hair Transplant is a surgical process, which involves hair removal from the donor area and plantation on the bald spots. The donor area is mostly the back or sides of your head, where the hair density is good. Extracting hair from the donor area and planting the hair follicles on the bald region is the hair transplantation. This technique along with other hair loss treatments like PRP and medication gives a long-lasting and permanent effect. The hair transplant scars vary with the hair follicle extraction process.

Hair Extraction Techniques & Scars

As explained earlier, the hair transplant scars occur during the hair extraction process. The two surgical hair extraction procedures most often used for hair transplant are follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT). Both are effective and shows results with visible hair growth within 3-6 months.

FUE Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) process involves extracting a larger number of individual hair follicular units from the donor site. In this, the process starts with extracting individual hair follicular units with 1 to 4 hairs by giving local anaesthesia. FUE is a micro hair removal process, which means the process uses tiny punches of 0.6mm and 1.0mm in diameter for hair extraction. Individual hair grafts are extracted for reducing post-surgery scars. The hair follicle extraction depends on the hair grafts requirement. Hence, the process can add up to many hundreds or even thousands of puncture mark scars. These hair transplant scars may look like tiny white dots after healing. In FUE the scars are scattered throughout the scalp making it less noticeable. Furthermore, within 3 months, hair grows in the donor area, making the dot sized hair transplant scars invisible.

Strip/ FUT Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Transplantation(FUT) hair transplantation process involves the extraction of a set of hairs in the form of a strip from the donor area with the help of a scalpel. This process is known as a strip hair transplant. Individual hair grafts are extracted from the strip. Hair grafts are extracted and the strip of follicular unit grafts are placed into tiny incisions in the bald areas on the patient’s scalp. This process leaves a linear hair transplant scar on the donor area. The linear scar may vary in length, based on the size of the strip extracted. In some instances, this scar might extend from ear to ear. However, after 6 months, once the hair grows, the scar becomes less visible. The size of the linear hair transplant scar depends on the number of hair grafts required. The more hair grafts, the bigger and wider the linear scars.
