How to Use Rice Water for Hair Treatment
What is Rice Water? When you boil rice, that milky liquid is the starch residue left behind from the rice. Normally, when we cook rice, we strain the excess rice water. Next time, do not throw this rice water away. It is rich in minerals and vitamins and makes a wonderful remedy for hair treatment.
Methods of Preparing Rice Water
1. Making the Plain Rice Water
Before preparing the rice water, rinse the rice in freshwater to remove any dirt or impurities. Then in a vessel put the rice, add 4 times water, that is if you take 1/2 cup rice(brown, white, basmati, long-grain, or short-grain), then add 2 cup water. Place the rice in the vessel cover with a plate. Let it boil for 15 minutes. Stir it around until the water turns cloudy. Once the rice is cooked, strain out the rice water into a clean bowl. This is a quick method to make rice water.
Strained rice water will be concentrated. Dilute it by adding 1 cup of plain water, then add a few drops of rosemary or lavender essential oil to it. After washing your hair with shampoo, pour the rice water over your hair and scalp. Massage and leave it for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with regular water. Use this weekly once for complete hair treatment.
2. Preparing the Fermented Rice Water
The fermented rice water is the rice water that is left to ferment for a day or 2 before using. Fermentation brings down the pH levels of the rice water to that of the hair. Fermented rice water contains ‘pitera’ which is rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and organic acids. This rice water takes time for preparation, however, this works more effectively compared to boiled rice water. It promotes healthy hair growth and improves the overall condition of the hair.
How to prepare fermented rice water?
Take 1/2 cup of rice and soak it in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, strain the soaked rice water. Keep this liquid in an air-tight jar in a dark place for 2 days. Let it ferment. This liquid can be very pungent and sour in smell after 2 days. Add 2 cups of warm water to the ferment rice water, and few drops of lavender oil to remove the sour smell. Apply this solution on scalp, hair, tips and root thoroughly. Let it soak in for 45 mins before washing with a mild shampoo.
